Our Story and The Story of Linen

Our Story

Our story is deeply intertwined with the story of linen. Having spent their early years as a young family in Belgium, Sophie and Friedrich grew up immersed in a world of interiors, where design was not just a profession but part of everyday life. Together with their mother, Margit Schmeide, an established and recognised interior designer, they were constantly surrounded by discussions of materials, textures, and the quiet beauty of thoughtful spaces. Drawing inspiration from the Belgian landscape, Margit developed a deep appreciation for flax, whose natural simplicity and tactile quality made linen a defining element of her work.

Today, this shared heritage continues to shape the next chapter. With a desire to capture their mother’s refined eye and natural aesthetic, they created Maison Marguerite, a collection that places fabric at its very heart. Linen, in particular, becomes the thread that connects past and present: honest, enduring, and effortlessly elegant. Margit remains closely involved, offering her creative guidance and experience throughout the design process, ensuring that each piece reflects the same sensitivity to material, light, and atmosphere that has long defined her work. Together, they have created a collection that is both a continuation of a legacy and a contemporary expression of timeless interiors.

And where the Story of Linen begins

The story of linen begins in early spring, when tiny flax seeds are sown beneath the soil and, within just one hundred days, rise into slender green stems that in June briefly crown the fields with delicate sky-blue flowers that bloom for only a few fleeting hours.

The Gentle Harvest

In July, flax is gently pulled from the earth rather than cut, preserving the full length of its fibres before resting in soft bundles across the fields. Through the summer months, rain, dew, and sun guide its quiet, natural transformation, releasing the precious fibres from the stalk before they are turned, gathered, and finally bundled into bales.

Revealing the Fibre

Through scutching, the flax fibres are carefully freed from the woody heart of the stalk in a precise mechanical process that can take place at any time of year, a thoughtful transformation in which nothing is lost, and every fibre and by-product finds its purpose.

From Ribbon to Yarn

Twisted with care through wet or dry spinning, the soft flax ribbons are transformed into yarns of many characters — from fine, delicate threads to more textured, rustic qualities — each defined by its fineness and destined for its own expression in cloth and interior.

The Fabric Takes Shape

Through weaving, warp and weft yarns gently intertwine, giving rise to fabrics of endless expression, from structured twills to fluid satins, each texture and finish shaping linen's final character in fashion, interiors, and refined living.

Explore our fabric collection and experience linen in its most refined expression, where natural beauty, craftsmanship, and timeless textures come together to shape interiors with quiet elegance.
